L.I.G.H.T. Positive Behavior System

At The School of Science and Applied Learning (X300), we are committed to creating a positive, safe, and joyful learning environment where every student feels valued and empowered.

Behavior expectations aligned to our L.I.G.H.T. values are taught, modeled, and reinforced throughout the school year. Students who consistently demonstrate these expectations are recognized and celebrated through classroom and school-wide incentives.

Cell Phone Policy

Students are NOT to use their cellphones during school.

To support a focused, distraction-free learning environment, The School of Science and Applied Learning (X300) uses Yondr Pouches for all students who bring a cell phone to school. A Yondr Pouch is a secure, lockable pouch that allows students to keep their phones with them while preventing access during the school day. The pouch remains with the student and can only be unlocked at designated unlocking stations at dismissal or when authorized by school staff. Schools use Yondr to reduce distractions and increase student engagement during instructional time.

Citywide Behavioral Expectations and Policy

A safe environment is critical if quality teaching and learning is to take place. A key element in producing such an environment is to ensure that parents and students understand the responsibilities that students have at school, what conduct is expected of them, and what the consequences are for unacceptable conduct. Please review the policy and discuss its implications with your child. We would appreciate your assistance in continuing to make X300 a safe and orderly school for all students.

Dress Code and Uniform Policy

CS 300 is a uniform school. Our uniform dress code is in place to allow for the emphasis at school to be on academic excellence for all students. Dress code is important because it reduces peer pressure related to style of dress, fosters a sense of community and team, reduces the cost of clothing for families, and increases school safety by making outsiders immediately apparent.

Remote Day Procedure

A citywide policy on remote days has been established by the Office of the Chancellor at the New York City Department of Education. Students will be expected to log on ready to learn.

By 6:00 AM, decisions about remote instruction will be announced on the 311 Information Line. You may also refer to the following for information about possible school closings:

• Department of Education website: www.schools.nyc.gov
• Radio stations: WINS (1010 AM), WCBS (880 AM), WBLS (107.5 FM), WNYE (91.5 FM)
• Television stations: Channel 2, Channel 4, Channel 5, Channel 7, Channel 25, or Channel 1 on cable

Internet Access Policy

The New York City Department of Education's policy is: "The purpose for accessing or using the internet through the DOE's connection or equipment is solely educational; therefore, anyone who utilizes the DOE's connection must foster that purpose by utilizing the internet resources only for educational purposes and in an appropriate and legal manner only. Violators of this policy may be subject to disciplinary/legal action."

Investigation Policy

As per Chancellor's Regulations, during any investigation, the principal or his/her designee may interview student witnesses and victims without first notifying the parent or requesting parental consent.

If the Office of the Special Commissioner of Investigation or the police wants to interview a student in connection with an investigation of a school-related incident, parental consent must be obtained. If, however, the parent cannot be reached and there is a health and safety emergency, the interview may take place and the parent will be notified following the interview. Under certain circumstances, the principal or designee will be present for the interview.

Breakfast and Lunch Policy

All children are entitled to eat breakfast. The hot breakfast will be served until 7:55 AM, "grab and go" will be offered starting at 8:05 AM, for students beginning at 8:00 AM while students report to their first period class.

Lunch is provided daily at the following times:

• 10:15 AM – 11:05 AM (Kindergarten & 1st Grade)
• 11:05 AM – 11:55 AM (2nd & 3rd Grade)
• 11:55 AM – 12:45 PM (4th & 5th Grade)

Photographs/Videos

Students may not take photographs of other students in the school building to avoid online "distribution" and/or internet abuse.

A form will be sent home at the beginning of the school year requesting permission for your child to be photographed or videotaped during various school activities and functions. This form must be signed by a parent/guardian and returned to school as soon as possible.

School Safety and Security

All visitors to our school must enter through the lobby entrance. All visitors must show valid photo identification to the Security Officer or staff member assigned to the lobby. Visitors will be issued a Visitor's Pass to the main office. Visitors must proceed to the main office before visiting any other area of the building. Parents are not permitted to informally visit classrooms without the prior approval of the teacher and administrator.
